This church situated about 20 drive from the city, on the foot hills of mighty Vitosha mountain. Church building small in the size, therefore offers less! But we can see the ancient values in every stones. Because of the size not much to see, ten minutes enough to explore whole area. Better includes this church when you visit nearby National History Museum, a must attraction in Sofia.

I was there twice and you can learn a lot of this ancient and magical place. There are 3 types of architecture in the same building dating from 3 periods. A Must-see if you visit Sofia or different places in Bulgaria.

The Boyana Church is an amazing piece of history. Well worth the visit and tour. The tour guides are amazing and will do their best to help you in English. There are lots of awesome photo ops outside the church although you cannot take pics inside. There is a book you can buy at the office - it is well worth getting.

You have to pay to visit this dinky little church - but it is worth it, you cannot take photos, as the paintings are so old. We did it as part of a Sofia Green tour before going up the mountain, so we got all the history too which was great!

This place is quite out of town, and not easy to get to if you don't have a car - but it's worth the trip. Your time in the church is limited (small groups of 10 or less, five minutes maximum per group) so make the most of it! I suggest you study up on the paintings before you get inside (from a guide book or via the Internet: http://www.boyanachurch.org/galeryen.htm) so you can enjoy them all the more during your limited time inside.

Beautiful Church. Wonderfully decorated and loved the paintings. It's a very old church, but still has a great architectural sight. Well worth the visit.

Situated at the foothill of Vitosha mountain the Boyana church is preserving unique paintings dating the 11th century. In a very small area there are very well preserved paintings from the unknown Boyana painter showing us realistic faces far before the Italian masters. The architecture of the church is also very interesting as it was build in two different periods. This is one of the must places for tourist with intellectual interest.

Old and unique place at arm's length from the center of Sofia. Here has preserved many interesting frescoes.

The trip to Boyana Church is perhaps 20 minutes drive from Sofia city center but it is worth the trip. This church dates back to the 10th century and exists in its own enclave at the base of Vitosha Mountain. We went there with a guide from V-Travel, which I definitely recommend. You need to buy tickets to go to the church grounds. Once there, you can walk around the church and see the various additions made in the 10th, 11th, 13th and 19th centuries. The bullet-ridden doorway is also a sight to see.But nothing can prepare you for going inside the church. It is tiny, a narrow walkway so don't bring in your backpack. They only allow visitors a few minutes at a time, which makes it feel kind of special and sacred. The ancient frescoes inside are amazing, pretty well-kept considering a thousand years have passed by.We enjoyed the church very much. Make sure to use a guide or find a good guidebook so you have the whole story.

This is one of the most visited buildings in Sofia. From the outside it would probably pass unnoticed but the inside is quite beautiful with all its frescos. You are not allowed to take photos inside (which is quite understandable). Still, this church was nothing that spectacular or anything (compared to Aleksander Nevsky Cathedral for example, which is THE must-see building in Sofia), but still worth seeing if you've got the time.

This small church is a real beauty. The portraits of the donors - Sebastocrator Kaloyan and Sebastocratoress Desislava and those of the royal family Tsar Constantin Assen and his wife Irina - are so inspired, expressive and realistic. It's hard to believe they were painted in 1259. These true masterpieces are considered herald of European Renaissance. Personally, I think the artist was a genius and also very emotional. I recommend visiting.

Even if I live in Sofia.I had issues finding this place as even the locals provided mixed info. After locating it is shows that the time spent was worthed!

This is a historically important church. You're not allowed to take photos inside but the frescoes are well worth seeing in this 10th Century UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also nice to see the outskirts of Sofia
